Bernard at School in the 1920s

Bernard Lewis

Bernard was born in Paris in 1912 but grew up mostly in London and became a boy violinist; by the age of 8 he was playing solo concerts in London.  He then became a professional musician until the outbreak of WWII.  His war years were spent in East Africa following which he joined the Colonial Service and served in Kenya, Rhodesia and Aden until 1965.  He then returned to England and spent 10 years working in Whitehall.  After his marriage to his second wife Margaret, an architect and landscape consultant, he moved to Wiltshire where he continued making music with local friends and musicians.  After Margaret’s death and upon loosing his sight he moved to Abbeyfield to be near to his son and daughter.  He still plays his violin, albeit only what he can remember.

“I moved to Abbeyfield in February 2009 after loosing my sight and to be near my son and daughter.  I feel settled and comfortable and rather too well fed !!”
